The Issues

Addressing Challenges

John Phillips recognizes the importance and challenges of addressing the unhoused community and the strain it places on the Champaign downtown area and local businesses. In recent years, businesses have left downtown and not returned, leaving storefronts empty and contributing to a high vacancy rate. Having seen the state of downtown in the 1990s and early 2000s, he understands the need for a clean and safe environment where people can work, play, and live. John Phillips is running for City of Champaign Township Supervisor to help revitalize the downtown area and support the viability of Champaign businesses. Additionally, he is committed to creating a safe, clean, and orderly space for the unhoused community, ensuring they receive both mental and physical care.

Leadership You Can See, Presence You Will Feel.

Strides Shelter

The current structure of the Strides Shelter is not functioning as intended, contributing to safety concerns in downtown Champaign and increasing the demand on public agencies. The shelter has a high call volume, placing a strain on police and fire department resources. Addressing these issues requires collaboration with elected officials and civil service agencies to develop a more effective program for the unhoused community. Additionally, revisiting the CU@Work initiative will be a key component in improving support systems and reducing the burden on public resources.

“As Township Supervisor, I will work to develop sustainable solutions that provide care and stability for the unhoused while ensuring downtown remains a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.”
