Champaign Roots

Born in Carbondale, IL, and raised in Champaign, John Phillips has deep roots in the community. After attending Dr. Howard and Booker T. Washington elementary schools, Jefferson Middle School, and Centennial High School, John spent a decade living and working in Chicago before returning to Champaign in 2010. His parents, a retired Episcopal priest and a retired teacher, still reside in the family home where he grew up.

As the President of Real Estate Development at Next Up Assets, John oversees the acquisition, renovation, leasing, and management of nearly 200 residential properties across Champaign-Urbana, Savoy, and Paxton, IL. His work focuses on providing quality, affordable housing in partnership with The Housing Authority of Champaign County, ensuring that residents in the area have access to stable, well-maintained homes.

Beyond real estate, John is passionate about youth sports and community development. He has been the head coach for St. Matthew boys’ basketball for the past three years, currently leads the 13U Yard Goat baseball team, and serves as an assistant coach for the Champaign Truth basketball team. Additionally, he plays a key leadership role in Champaign-Urbana Little League as Commissioner and Executive Board member, where he secures sponsorships, coordinates uniforms, and mentors coaches throughout the season.

Through both his professional work and volunteer efforts, John remains committed to strengthening the Champaign-Urbana community—one home, one team, and one family at a time.
